The Zonta Club of Makati and Environs (ZCME), in collaboration with Likhaan, recently hosted a seminar focused on menstrual health and the distribution of reusable menstrual pads and cups. The event was led by ZCME’s Dr. Aileen Cheng, ZCME President Joanne Andrada, and Dr. Junice Melgar of Likhaan. This initiative aimed to provide marginalized women with an affordable and sustainable solution to menstrual care while promoting environmental responsibility.

A key benefit of the reusable menstrual products is their long-term impact: one menstrual cup can replace over 2,400 disposable pads or tampons, effectively preventing a truckload of waste over a span of 10 years per user. Additionally, reusable pads can last an average of 4.3 years, offering both cost savings and waste reduction, as they eliminate the need for disposable products throughout their lifespan.

The seminar and distribution reached over 120 girls, all residents of Marillac Hills, a government-run institution dedicated to caring for sexually abused girls. This project not only provided essential menstrual products but also empowered these young women with knowledge about sustainable menstrual health solutions.

The project will span one year, during which evaluations and data will be collected both throughout and after its completion to assess the program's effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
