Every two years, the BRAVO Empowered Women Awards program honors change makers, achievers, and advocates of social change nationwide. As a way to implement the biennium theme of “Honor and Empower”, it acknowledges the contributions of notable individuals who deliver significant economic and social impact and demonstrate incredible dedication to service and leadership.

The project, done in  collaboration  with  Security  Bank, has proved to be one of the most visible and successful partnership since its inception in 2015. Through the BRAVO Awards, we have helped to promote the participation of women from various sectors.

This year, the Board of Judges was composed of Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales, Dr. Jikeong Kang, Mrs. Olivia Celeste M. Villafuerte, Mrs. Maria Isabel Ongpin, and Ms. Cherrie Atilano.

While the recipients of this year’s awards come from different backgrounds and excel in various fields, our judges all agreed that they serve as inspiration for us all. Some of them include a jiu-jitsu player who advocates against child sexual abuse, a Bagobo chieftain who is championing her tribe’s culture, and founders of social enterprises. Read on to get to know the nine outstanding BRAVO Empowered Women.

Security Bank pays tribute to Filipina trailblazers through BRAVO Awards

SECURITY Bank Corporation (SBC), together with event partner Zonta Club of Makati & Environs, recognized remarkable Filipinas in the 3rd BRAVO Empowered Women Awards on July 25, 2019 at the JYD Hall of Security Bank Centre in Makati.

The BRAVO Empowered Women Awards program honors change makers, achievers, and advocates of social change nationwide. It acknowledges the contributions of notable individuals who deliver   significant   economic and social impact and demonstrate incredible dedication to service and leadership.

This year’s winners were selected across a broad range of demographics and interesting backgrounds. The awardees include a tribal chieftain from Davao;   a 29-year-old Jiujitsu world champion; and a former investment banker who established the first sustainable and most technologically advanced rice processing complex in the Philippines.

The awardees are Ma. Rhodora Fresnedi, Rachel Marjorie Renucci-Tan, Margarita Ochoa, Magnolia Yrasuegui, Dr. Rosario Oreta-Lapus, Mona Magno Veluz, Waya Araos-Wijanco, and Bae Arlyne

Salazar. These women were chosen based on their individual achievements, personal advocacies, and inspiring stories of triumph over adversity in the categories of Business, Science & Technology,  Sports,  Media & Public Affairs, Education, Social Services, Culinary Arts, and Arts, Culture & Heritage respectively.

“The accomplishments of these women are as breathtaking as the lives they chose to lead,” said Ada Mabilangan, Chairman of 8 BRAVO Awards. “What’s more inspiring is their unrelenting commitment to uplift the lives of Filipinos from socially marginalized sectors. We are privileged to put a spotlight on the exemplary work they do,” she added.

Security Bank President & CEO Sanjiv Vohra believes that the BRAVO awards are aligned with the spirit of Security Bank’s mission to uphold conscientious decisions and actions for a sustainable Philippines.

“Our corporate success is sustainable only if we lead positive social change. We   are  committed  to  the  ideals    of BetterBanking which entails creating better opportunities for all. Our partnership with Zonta, through the BRAVO awards, aims to promote the important roles and contributions of women in today’s landscape. Their work needs to be supported, highlighted, and increasingly recognized,” said Vohra.

Lourdes Reyes-Montinola, the Chair Emeritus on  the  Board  of  Trustees  of Far Eastern University (FEU), is this year’s recipient of the BRAVO Lifetime Achievement Award. Reyes- Montinola was instrumental in the re- establishment of FEU as a prominent educational institution. In 1991, she authored “Piña” which gave renewed local and global attention to the cultural significance of the pineapple plant, helping revive the piña fabric industry.

Through the Bravo Empowered Women Awards, Security Bank promotes the proactive participation of women from various sector. The Bank also seeks to drive social change in favor of inclusive growth, in fulfillment  of  its  mission to enrich lives, empower businesses, and build communities through BetterBanking.

Bravo Woman for Arts, Culture & Heritage

Bae Arlyn Salazar is the chieftain of the Bagobo-Tagawaba tribe in Davao del Sur. She also manages the Bagobo Arts and Crafts Center on behalf of the Bagobo Tagabawa Council.

Magnolia Fernandez-Yrasuegui is the station manager of Far Eastern Broadcasting Company, as well as an announcer and producer of the station’s “Moments of Grace” program.

Dr. Rosario Oreta-Lapus is the President of Miriam College. Aside from being an educator, she is also a specialist in human development.

Margarita Ochoa

Bravo Woman for Sports

Ms. Margarita Ochoa is a three-time Jiu-jitsu world champion. She is also the first and only Filipina to become the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation World Champion

Mona Magno Veluz

Bravo Woman for Social Services

Mona Magno Veluz is the National President of the Autism Society of the Philippines (ASP) and the mind behind the ASP’s Autism Works economic empowerment program.

Waya Araos-Wijangco

Bravo Woman for Culinary Arts

Waya Araos-Wijangco is the owner and founder of the Open Hand School of Applied Arts, which she established in 2011 as a vocational school for people with special needs to learn basic skills.

Lourdes Reyes-Montinola

Lifetime Awardee

Ms. Lourdes Reyes-Montinola is the Chair Emeritus on the Board of Trustees of the Far Eastern University, which she inherited from her father Nicanor Reyes in 1989.

Rachel Marjorie Tan

Bravo Woman for Science & Technology

Rachel Marjorie Relucci-Tan is the owner of Chen Yi Agventures (CYA), a private company focused on modernizing rice processing and providing assistance to farmers in Leyte.

Formerly a real estate investment banker and fund manager, Ms. Relucci-Tan and her husband established the Renucci Partnership Program, a low-interest, loan-in-kind venture to farmers, after Typhoon Haiyan struck Leyte in 2013.

In 2015, they established CYA – the first sustainable, fully- integrated rice processing complex in the country, which lowered production costs while yielding high quality rice. Ms. Relucci-Tan’s commitment towards a self-sufficient, rice- producing Philippines is reflected on the outcome of her investments.

Bae Arlyn Salazar

Bravo Woman for Arts, Culture & Heritage

Bae Arlyn Salazar is the chieftain of the Bagobo-Tagawaba tribe in Davao del Sur. She also manages the Bagobo Arts and Crafts Center on behalf of the Bagobo Tagabawa Council.

As one of the first female chieftains, Bae Salazar is a champion of Bagobo culture. She strives to promote sustainable livelihood for the Bagobo women, helping them introduce their beadwork and embroidery to the rest of the world. When she teaches beadwork to her fellow tribeswomen, she ensures to impart stories about their ancestors and their tribe. Aside from mentorship, Bae Salazar also engages institutions to educate women on financial literacy.

Maria Rhodora P. I. Palomar-Fresnedi

Bravo Woman for Business

Ms. Ma. Rhodora Fresnedi was the first global Vice President for Unilever in London and was one of the most senior Asian women who worked for the company.

Aside from being an international speaker, Ms. Fresnedi holds senior advisor positions in organizations such as the Center for Talent Innovation and the Hidden Brain Drain Project.

Ms. Fresnedi also founded the Leadership Journey Institute, which provides development programs and coaching for health care leaders in the country, and Project Diffabilities (or Different Abilities) for persons with disabilities (PWDs), which enables them to secure equal opportunities for employment and for life.

Magnolia Fernandez-Yrasuegui

Bravo Woman for Media/Public Affairs

Magnolia Fernandez-Yrasuegui is the station manager of Far Eastern Broadcasting Company, as well as an announcer and producer of the station’s “Moments of Grace” program.

Last February, she began a program called Blessing Rahab, where she teaches livelihood skills to women of the streets to rescue them from commercial sexual exploitation.

Ms. Fernandez-Yrasuegui uses her voice not only to encourage others to take part in her championed causes, but also to spread messages of hope in various communities and sectors she works with.

Dr. Rosario Oreta-Lapus

Bravo Woman for Education

Dr. Rosario Oreta-Lapus is the President of Miriam College. Aside from being an educator, she is also a specialist in human development. Dr. Oreta-Lapus is a known advocate for women in STEM. Her vision for Miriam College includes a fuller integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) in the curriculum.

She is the brains behind the first integrated makerspace in the Philippines, an Innovation Center built to promote research and creative thinking among students, paving the way to meaningful collaborations inside and outside the institution.

She also spearheaded Project COGENT (Cooperation for Girls’ Education, Nurturance, and Training), which prompted 18 schools for girls in the Philippines to come together, leading to the creation of PAGE (Philippine Alliance for Girls’ Education), a partnership towards the pursuit of quality girls’ education.

Margarita Ochoa

Bravo Woman for Sports

Ms. Margarita Ochoa is a three-time Jiu-jitsu world champion. She is also the first and only Filipina to become the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation World Champion, as well as the first Asian to win the top prize.
When she is not training, Ms. Ochoa also teaches at Jiu- jitsu Manila. She is currently leading the Fight to Protect movement, which aims to create awareness about child sexual abuse through Jiu-jitsu. Ms.  Ochoa was  also  instrumental in pushing for a Safe Sport Commission, a body that would ensure the localization of policies and measures against abuse and harassment in sports.  

Mona Magno Veluz

Bravo Woman for Social Services

Mona Magno Veluz is the National President of the Autism Society of the Philippines (ASP) and the mind behind the ASP’s Autism Works economic empowerment program. Among the projects under this program include the ASPAustiMALL Pilipinas, a virtual marketplace for products and services by

Persons With Autism (PWAs) and ASP Project ChocolatA, a workshop for chocolate truffle making.

These programs  are  developed to make the country an Autism-OK nation that endorses fair employment and livelihood for individuals with autism.

Currently, Ms. Veluz is actively participating in an ASEAN mapping project to improve data collection on autism in Southeast Asia to aid in policy recommendations in the region. Ms. Veluz’ groundbreaking work has since created huge strides for the PWA community.

Waya Araos-Wijangco

Bravo Woman for Culinary Arts

Waya Araos-Wijangco is the owner and founder of the Open Hand School of Applied Arts, which she established in 2011 as a vocational school for people with special needs to learn basic skills.

Ms. Araos-Wijangco is also the owner of Gourmet Gypsy Art Cafe, which has been operating since 2014. Gourmet Gypsy is a social enterprise where 30% of the staff have special needs. Aside from providing equal work opportunities to PWDs, Ms. Araos-Wijiangco aims to promote sustainable and waste-free food preparation and support towards local farmers.

Lourdes Reyes-Montinola

Lifetime Awardee

Ms. Lourdes Reyes-Montinola is the Chair Emeritus on the Board of Trustees of the Far Eastern University, which she inherited from her father Nicanor Reyes in 1989. Ms. Reyes- Montinola was instrumental in re-establishing FEU as an esteemed educational institution.

In 1991, she authored “Piña” which gave renewed local and global attention to the cultural significance of the pineapple plant, helping revive the piña fabric industry. “Breaking the Silence,” her more personal work, is a memoir about the fate of 100,000 civilians during the Battle of Manila which won the National Book Award for Biography in 1997.
