A Scarf Party

From the comfort of their homes, glammed up wearing their one-of-a-kind, Juvenal Sanso-print scarves, Zonta Club of Makati and Environs members (and a few distinguished guests) “zoomed” in last August 25 to witness the installation of officers and board of directors and the induction of new members for Biennium 2020-2022. The event was hosted by ZCME member and District 17 PR co-chair Joanne Zapanta-Andrada.

First on the program was the welcoming speech by the guest of honor, District 17 Governor Chavali “Pam’ Osathanugrah. She spoke about the history and goals of Zonta International and her journey as a Zontian. In her message, she quoted her former college professor and US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright: “It took me quite a long time to develop a voice. And now that I have it, I am not going to be silent.”DG Pam ended her speak with this hopeful message: “Our collective voice will be heard to eliminate violence against women and girls so they no longer have to live in fear. You (Zontians) will continue on your journey to inspire others and to be continuously inspired.”

Past President Maritess Pineda presented the ZCME’s Centennial Champion and Centennial Community Awards 2020. The Centennial Champion awards was given to Judge Elisa Sarmiento Flores, Makati Mayor Mar-len Abigail Binay, actress Angel Locsin Colmenares, and Dr. Regina Berba. The Centennial Community awards were presented to Unilever Philippines (accepted by president Benjie Yap), Security Bank Corporation (accepted by senior vice-president for retail marketing Ceres Joyce De Jesus), The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service/TOWNS (accepted by vice-president Dr. June Lopez and trustee Teresita Ang See), and Grace To Be Born (accepted by executive director Esther Palacio).

After her valedictory speech and the presentation of the biennium’s achievement video, PP Maritess Pineda proceeded to present the club’s Presidential Awards. This award is given in recognition of officers and honorary members who have displayed great commitment and support to the organization. The awardees were District 17 Area 5 director Armita Rufino, club treasurer Celia Angeles, ZCME Psychological Center head Joanne Zapanta-Andrada, EWSP & HNH project head Victoria Wieneke, Z & Golden Z club head Maritoni Rufino-Tordesillas, Zonta Club of Makati Legaspi & Zonta Club Samar’s SOM Carolina Llanilo, Bravo8 Awards chair Ada Mabilangan, Kababaihan project head Michelle Bartolome, ZCME leadership mentors Olivia Ferry and Erlinda Panlilio, ZCME website and newsletter head Charming Baldemor, Grace To Be Born project head Monica Aveo, UN Celebration project lead Olga Martel, FORA by FilipinaZ project lead Carmina S. Jacob, ZCME executive assistant Jay Joaquino, Daniela Bartolome, Anton Mendoza, and Khristina Marie Ricarder.

Armita Rufino opened the swearing ceremony with the installation of the Nominating Committee for Biennium 2020/2022 composed of Carolina Llanilo, Olivia Villafuerte, and Carina Lebron. This was followed by Lizette Lim presenting the Board of Directors namely Ma. Christina Bautista, Dominique Benitez, Carmina S. Jacob, Corazon DJ Tan, and Maritoni Rufino-Tordesillas. Teresa Lin presented new secretaries Marian Josephine Martina Santos and Melissa Romualdez; treasurers Ma. Teresa C. Tan and Victorina Magadia; and vice president Melanie C. De Leon.

Past Zonta International and ZCME president Olivia Ferry ended the installation by presenting the gavel and pin to the new president for Biennium 2020/2022, Vivian Uy. Newly-installed president Vivian took the virtual podium to deliver her speech and her thoughtful vision for next year.

Melissa Romualdez introduced the new members of the club: financial advisor Shirley Ang, events manager Ma. Cristina Barretto-Cabildo, fund manager Marcy Kohchet-Chua, designer Zarah Juan, country head educator Ma. Lourdes Nicole Liu, and manpower specialist Victoria Chingtocu-Yu. The ladies’ induction was presided over by president Vivian Uy. The events proper concluded with the closing remarks delivered by vice-president Melanie C. De Leon.

As a proper finale to the evening’s event, members and guests were treated to a song number from the talented and popular Mr. Jose Mari Chan singing ‘A Love To Last A Lifetime.’
